This panel will explore different dimension of the problem of Tibetan education. The main aim is to present the results of ongoing empirical research into the issues facing Tibetans in education. The focus is on the question of why Tibetans are not achieving at higher levels in China's education system. The first paper by Banjue provides an macroscopic overview of rural education, culture and economy in rural Tibet. The second papar by Zhang will examine the special aspects of Tibetan intellectual styles within the higher education system. The third paper by Manlaji will analyze the policies and practices of Tibetan medium instruction in China. The final paper will review the research on Tibetans in Chinese boarding schools across major cities. The panel members will discuss the possibilities for improving Tibetan education achievement levels within China.
