The Summer School for PE Teachers 2007, featuring the theme "Catering Learner Diversity" was initiated by the Education Bureau and organized by the Physical Education (PE) Division, Department of Creative Arts and Physical Education, the Hong Kong Institute of Education. The project focuses on developing the awareness of relevant and innovative practices in PE curriculum and pedagogy, in particular, how learner diversity can be catered in PE in local schools.

Theme and Aims

In recent years, high quality education for all students has been the major focus in the current education reform in Hong Kong . Accordingly, attention has been placed on how school and teachers can be developed to provide quality educational services in response to student diversity (Curriculum Development Council, 2002; Education and Manpower Bureau, 2004). It is the basic belief of members of the project development team that all students can learn in accordance with their multiple intelligence and ever-improving capabilities in all the domains of learning. The learning and participation of all students should be the major concern by all teachers regardless of their educational needs, interest and ability. It is essential and necessary to cultivate all stake holders in education especially PE teachers, concerning the attitude, belief, behaviours and actions for catering learners with diverse ability, needs and interests in PE provisions.

To achieve the above aims, PE teachers have to develop to enable all students to learn and perform to the best of their abilities, needs and interest. They have to be aware, familiarized and acquainted with curricular and pedagogical knowledge, skills and competence concerning means and actions for catering learner diversity in PE. PE teachers have to structure, implement and achieve the aims, content, pedagogies and assessment for catering learner diversity in PE. “The ultimate goal is to stretch the potential of all students whether they are gifted or among the low achievers” (CDC, 2002, p. 7). The aims of the Summer School for PE teachers 2007 are as follows:

a/ To familiarize PE teachers with the latest development in PE, in particular, catering leaner diversity;
b/ To disseminate good practices and share the experiences among PE teachers with particular emphasis on how learner diversity can be catered;
c/ To deepen PE teachers' professional knowledge for promoting learners' learning regardless of their diversity in needs, abilities and interests.

The programmes include:

1. Conference

2. Experience Sharing Seminars

3. Workshops
